Michael Steve Joshua Sinurat
This photographic work is a series of visual explorations of the stillness and power of nature, recorded in black and white and printed by hand in a darkroom. Incorporating natural landscape elements such as trees, horizon lines and seascapes, these photographs not only aesthetically showcase the beauty of nature, but also reflect on the spiritual connection between humans and their natural surroundings.
Using analog cameras and black and white film, each image is captured through an intuitive and slow approach. The selection of subjects such as a single tree, ocean waves, and the horizon line at the end of the sea are presented as symbols of tranquility, emptiness, and the eternal continuity of nature.
The printing process is done manually in a dark room using the silver gelatin print technique. Through the process, the textural forms between the trees, the reflection of light on the water surface, and the sharp contrast between dark and light elements in the open landscape were attempted. The tonal gradations in each print reinforce the emotional nuances from calm to melancholy and present nature as a space that is not only seen, but also felt deeply.
Stripped of color, the work emphasizes form, light, and composition as the main elements in reading the landscape. There are no color distractions, only lines and shadows.
